Intermodal
transport

Intermodal transport involves the transportation of freight in special cargo containers using at least two modes of transportation, without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. Intermodal transport combines the advantages of rail and road freight transport. Its task is to redirect long-distance road freight transport to rail in order to ease traffic congestions, reduce the consequences of traffic accidents, save energy, use space rationally, as well as to reduce environmental and noise pollution. In places where different modes of transport meet, cargo containers are shifted from one vehicle to another with the help of modern transshipment devices. Intermodal transport is based on the cooperation between different partners in the logistics chain, such as rail freight carriers, national and international intermodal operators, freight forwarding companies, road transport companies, shipping companies, container terminal owners, industrial manufacturers, maritime agents and port companies.
